For kids struggling in school, not doing well at school, not progressing in school, or performing poorly in public school, HuckleBerry classes can be a welcome change. Public school can be a very discouraging experience for a lot of kids. There are many ways working with Huck can change your child's attitudes and performance around learning.

1. Since you will be customizing your child's education you can meet them where they are with the classes at the exact level your child is ready for.

2. Huck classes are designed to be deeply engaging for our youngest students (ages 4-6) with small class sizes of 6-10 and slightly larger classes for ages 6-13. Our classes are designed to give students lots of attention and connection to the subject through hands on learning and fun projects.

3. Grades don't motivate the long term behavior that we're looking for; a love of learning. So in our classes, kids have a chance to learn without the pressures or anxiety of testing and busy work. For many kids, this is a kind of environment can make all the difference. Once students move into high school level classes, grades are a part of the experience, but we have a student-centered rubric that emphasizes participation, deep thinking and collaboration in addition to acquiring specific knowledge.

As your child moves at their own pace they are much more confident about tackling new subjects and can grow their academic skills as you tailor their classes and subjects to meet their needs. We have experienced many students turn around their whole view of learning. HuckleBerry also offers expert coaching to help new parents build their child's educational journey, so help is available if you don't feel confident enough to tackle it alone.

Kids don't enjoy school for all kinds of reasons, from academic, to environmental, to social. You don't have to leave your child in a situation you know isn't bringing out the best in them. HuckleBerry has a very different atmosphere in all of these areas. First of all, we are not a school and no one is required to attend any classes. They are here because they want to be here! That said, our classes our small and fun, and tend to be much more engaging for students who may have disengaged from learning. You have the ability to pick teachers and classes that work for your student, so you can give them a learning experience that is a perfect fit for their personality and academic needs.

Our community is small and our students want to be here, creating an on-campus culture of motivated students, involved parents and caring teachers who inspire and respect each other. Our expectations of behavior is high! Students are taught how to speak up for themselves and to respect themselves and others. There is no swearing, bullying or non inclusive behavior. No pretend violence! And most importantly, we are a no tech campus. From parents to students, admins and teachers, we do not allow the use of cell phone, encouraging our students to bond with each other and enjoy running and playing on our beautiful playground.

Class size, community size, access to teachers, accepting student culture and engaging curriculum all contribute to making Huck a completely different experience. Some students who have been going to public school will need time to adjust to the freedom and accountability that comes with being a student here. The longer your kid has been in a discouraging situation, the more time it might take to adjust and open them up to new friendships and attitudes toward owning their own learning journey.

Many parents who come to Huck have come to the conclusion that their public school system is not going be able to provide their kids with the education they deserve. These parents have decided to partner with Huck as a way to take back control and help facilitate a beautiful educational experience that will meet their needs.

Unfortunately our public schools do not have enough resources to fully consider any individual child. Between class sizes, budgets and mandated testing, teachers are overwhelmed and under-equipped. Teachers are being asked to differentiate to wider and wider student abilities and behaviors. Post Covid, many children experienced huge educational gaps, and teachers are still struggling to help their students catch up to their standards. This means that many children will be under served in the public schools.

HuckleBerry is not a school, we are your partner in education. You are in the driver's seat and can fully customize your child's educational experience to meet their needs, whether they are struggling in one area or need more challenge in another. The class sizes allow for more individual attention and understanding from your teachers. The flexibility built in to our structure allows parents and students to adjust and change course during the school year if something is not working or needs to be changed.

Many parents don't consider the idea of "homeschooling" because they don't think they are capable and misunderstand what's possible. Huck is an essential resource to these families. Many students attend Huck classes everyday! They are filling their schedules and all their course requirements. This allows parents to outsource parts of their child's education and give them more time to focus on the bigger picture educational goals. While the students get the benefit of having expert teachers, small classrooms and engaging hands on projects, the quality of their classroom time goes far beyond what is possible in large scale 50 minute classes. As a result, our students feel respected as individuals and build more confidence in their own abilities.

For kids currently doing LAUSD distance learning or LAUSD Homeschooling program Huck can be a great alternative. Huckleberry's subjects are expert-led live classes with in-person and online options for those who need to be home for medical or travel reasons. You do not need to be a part of a charter school program to attend classes at Huck, you can just sign up for classes and supplement what you are doing with your independent study. Another option is to enroll in a homeschooling charter school.

Many parents homeschooling through their local public school's independent study program quickly find it uninspiring and can drain all joy of learning from their kids. Homeschooling through a public homeschooling Charter School like Blue Ridge Academy or Sage Oak is an entirely different approach that might be more enjoyable to your student. Many of these Charter school students allocate some of their charter funds to attend classes at Huck.

Homeschooling this way provides for a lot more flexibility and freedom for parents to create an education that will meet your child's individual needs. You are not required to work with with a particular curriculum or given assignments through your charter (charters will have different requirements). For the most part, they let you choose the way you would like to meet your child's academic needs. This is where Huck comes in.

Many charters have different policies and structures. It's important to find the right fit for your family.

No! HuckleBerry is a learning center. Think of us like a college for kids! We offer classes cafeteria-style so that parents can sign up for whatever they need to augment what they're doing at home. Some parents like to use a full curriculum for all core subjects at home, and come to HuckleBerry for electives like art and theatre. Some parents like to teach to their strengths, and use a center like HuckleBerry to teach subjects that are hard to teach at home. Some parents want reinforcement for what they're teaching at home. Whatever your need is, HuckleBerry is set up to help you in this educational journey with core classes, electives, core subjects taught outside of the standards, tutoring, social activities and family activities!

Have you noticed that our classes are segmented by age ranges and not be a "grade"? You won't see a 4th grade class, or a 7th grade class. Instead, we offer subjects in age ranges. This way, students can operate at the level that works for them. They don't have to be in classes that are way too hard or way too easy. Parents read the class descriptions and sign their children up for classes that match their child's interests and abilities!

Remember, in the state of California your child must be enrolled in a school, and HuckleBerry is not a school! Our students are either enrolled in a Public Charter School that has an Independent Student Program, or they have started their own school using a Private School Affidavit. HuckleBerry can recommend a number of charter schools that have accepted our learning center as a vendor.
