High School Biology with Labs AG
Ages: 14+
Class hours: 2 hours once a week. 31 weeks
Homework: 2+ hours each week - required. Students will need to read prior to class as well as complete homework assignments. We recommend that students form study groups outside of class to meet in person or over zoom to complement this class.
NOTE: Students will need to complete a summer assignment prior to classes starting in September to meet their charter school learning period requirements.
Welcome to Biology with weekly labs at HuckleBerry!
This course follows the Biology standards to guide student learning, through hands-on instruction, as they explore the following key concept areas:
1) Structure and Function,
2) Inheritance and Variation of Traits,
3) Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems,
4) Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems and
5) Natural Selection and Evolution.
We will be exploring the interconnectedness of all living beings, large and small! We will be exploring how all forms of life - both large and small - are connect to each other. We'll be using microscopes, dissecting various small insects and animals, and looking at how the actions happening on the planet , whether they are human-made or not, are affecting life on earth. As the earth changes, what are the affects? We ask lots of questions, and students will learn some of the answers in class, and will do additional research outside of class to come up with their hypothesis of what the future will hold.
Students should expect weekly lecture and labs, homework, end of unit quizzes and tests and a final exam. Most charter schools require a portfolio of work to be built, so we'll share these as the year progresses. Please share this syllabus with your charter school to ensure that no additional work will be needed. This class is tied to CA State Standards, NGSS standards, Blue Ridge and Gorman course guidelines. Please let us know if your charter school has requirements outside of this syllabus and we will try to accommodate that.
Unit 1: Introduction to Biology and the Scientific Method - this unit is done over the summer to prepare for this class.
Unit 2: Ecology: Focus of the unit is on ecological processes and the interactions of living and nonliving organisms.
Unit 3: Matter and Energy: Focus of the unit is on how energy flows within the organizational systems of living things.
Unit 4: Focus of the unit is on the processes of evolutionary processes, the fossil record and evolutionary relationships.
Unit 5: Cells and Organisms: Focus of the unit is on the structure, function and mechanisms of the systems within the human body and cells.
Unit 6: Genetics: Focus of the unit is on genetic processes in the cell.
Unit 7: Human Impact on Climate, Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Unit 8: Final Portfolio Review. We will be looking at Portfolios throughout the year!
